Dainichi Koi Farm – A Legacy of Excellence

Dainichi Koi Farm is widely regarded as one of the most important and influential breeders in the history of Nishikigoi. Founded in Niigata Prefecture by the late Minoru Mano, the farm has been instrumental in shaping the koi bloodlines we see around the world today. Following the 2004 Niigata earthquake, the farm relocated to a new facility in Sanbusho, Ojiya City, where it now spans over 400,000 square metres of ponds and greenhouses dedicated to raising koi of the highest standard.

Today, Dainichi is led by Minoru’s sons, Futoshi and Shigeru Mano, who have continued their father’s vision with the same passion and dedication. Their focus remains on breeding Gosanke – Kohaku, Sanke, and Showa – the three most prestigious koi varieties. These bloodlines are renowned for their powerful body conformation, superb skin quality, and beautifully balanced patterns, making Dainichi koi some of the most sought-after in the world.

The farm’s reputation is built not only on its breeding success but also on its long history of champion koi. Dainichi has produced multiple Grand Champions at the All Japan Nishikigoi Show, the most competitive koi exhibition in the world, cementing its place at the very top of the industry. Their koi are instantly recognisable for their thick, snow-white shiroji, vibrant hi (red), and refined sumi (black), often enhanced by the farm’s unique husbandry methods, including seasonal fasting to develop stronger bodies and sharper patterns.

What makes Dainichi truly special is its lasting influence on other breeders. Many of the leading koi farms in Japan today can trace their bloodlines back to Dainichi stock, proving the farm’s enduring role in shaping Nishikigoi genetics. To this day, koi enthusiasts around the globe look to Dainichi as a symbol of quality, innovation, and tradition in koi breeding.

For collectors, owning a Dainichi koi is more than just an addition to a pond – it is a connection to the very roots of modern koi keeping, and to a farm that has defined what excellence in Gosanke truly means.
