Hirashin Koi Farm
Founded in 1959 and based in Minaminigoro, Ojiya (Niigata Prefecture), Hirashin Koi Farm is run by breeder Hirasawa Hiroyuki. The farm has earned a strong reputation for producing elegant Mujimono (plain-coloured koi) and metallic varieties, focusing not on sheer size, but on refinement, colour purity, and beauty of form.
With approximately 20,000 m² of raising area, Hirashin specialises in varieties such as Ogon, Chagoi, Magoi, Kin Matsuba, Hi Utsuri, Goshiki, Yamabuki, and other Hikarimono. These koi are known for their clean lines, lustrous skin, and strong bodies—hallmarks of the farm’s careful selection and traditional methods.
Located in a mountainous region that sees heavy snow each winter, Hirashin operates in relative isolation, where the challenging environment has shaped a philosophy of breeding koi with enduring quality. As Hirasawa himself says: “We’re not aiming to breed big koi, but beautiful koi, even if they’re small.”
