Hosokai Koi Farm

Founded in 1971 by Shoichi Hosokai and now run by his son Masaru Hosokai, Hosokai Koi Farm is a respected breeder located in Ojiya, Niigata Prefecture, the birthplace of Nishikigoi. Spanning approximately 80,000 m² with around 100 mud ponds and a broodstock of 100 parent koi, Hosokai combines scale with a clear focus on producing koi of both tradition and innovation.

The farm is best known for its excellence in Asagi and Goshiki, two of the oldest and most visually striking koi varieties. Despite Niigata’s clay-heavy soil—which is traditionally considered unsuitable for Asagi—Hosokai has achieved worldwide recognition for producing Asagi of exceptional quality, including koi that have won national awards. Their Goshiki and unique Goshikishigure (a blend of Goshiki and Ochiba Shigure) are also highly sought after for their bold colours, depth, and striking contrasts.

In addition to these specialties, Hosokai also breeds Gosanke (Kohaku, Sanke, Showa), Shusui, and Goromo, continuing the farm’s tradition of offering a wide selection while maintaining the highest standards of refinement. Each year, around 50’000 fry are bred and carefully selected, with only the very best raised on to carry the Hosokai name.
