Ikarashi Toshinobu Koi Farm

Founded in 1962 in Mushigame, Yamakoshi, Nagaoka (Niigata Prefecture) by the late Kazuto “Sen’nin” Ikarashi, Ikarashi Toshinobu Koi Farm has grown into one of Japan’s most respected and innovative koi breeders. Today, the farm is led by Toshinobu Ikarashi, who continues the family tradition while introducing new ideas that set the farm apart on the world stage.

Best known for producing large, high-quality Gosanke—Kohaku, Sanke, and Showa—Ikarashi koi are admired for their size, balance, and ability to remain beautiful as they mature. Beyond Gosanke, the farm is also recognised as the creator of the unique Ginrin Aragoke variety, where the shimmering scales of Ginrin combine with the bold texture of Doitsu aragoke scales. Once considered imperfections, these scales are celebrated at Ikarashi as a distinctive feature, giving the koi a striking appearance that appeals to collectors worldwide.

Alongside Gosanke and Aragoke, the farm breeds a wide selection of varieties including Benikikokuryu, Goshiki, Ochiba, Chagoi, Asagi, Koromo, Kujaku, Hariwake, Yamabuki, and Kawarimono, ensuring a diverse offering for koi enthusiasts.

What truly sets Ikarashi Toshinobu Koi Farm apart is its breeding philosophy. Rather than focusing only on producing koi that peak early for competition, Toshinobu breeds koi for longevity, resilience, and enduring beauty. This approach has cemented the farm’s reputation as a breeder of koi that not only impress in shows but also bring lasting enjoyment to ponds around the world.
