Kansuke Koi Farm
Founded in 1972 by Seiji Tomono, Kansuke Koi Farm is based in Ojiya City, Niigata Prefecture, one of the true birthplaces of Nishikigoi. Over the past five decades, Kansuke has become a name that carries enormous respect within the koi world, known for producing some of the finest Kohaku bloodlines in Japan.
Kansuke is not one of the largest koi farms, but what it may lack in size, it makes up for in reputation. The farm has earned global recognition for its champion-quality Kohaku, prized for their vibrant colours, balanced body shapes, and traditional elegance.
From the very beginning, founder Seiji Tomono set out with a clear and ambitious goal:
“To breed Kohaku that are not only beautiful, but worthy of becoming champions.”
Unlike many breeders who inherited bloodlines and techniques, Seiji is self-taught, relying on careful observation, experimentation, and relentless dedication. He is often described as an old-school, self-made master—a breeder who built his legacy through determination rather than inheritance.
Key Aspects of the Kansuke Approach:
Learning from the Best: Inspired by breeders in the nearby Shiodani area (renowned for Kohaku), Seiji studied their methods, absorbed their knowledge, and adapted techniques to suit his own vision.
Blending Elite Bloodlines: Kansuke is known for crossing Dainichi males with Sakai females, a strategic blend that produces koi with powerful growth potential, excellent body conformation, and the rich pigmentation needed for long-lasting hi (red) and shiroji (white).
