Nagashima Koi Farm – Excellence from Yamakoshi, Niigata

Founded and managed by Mr. Nagashima, affectionately known in the koi world as “Otozo”, Nagashima Koi Farm is a respected breeder located in the Mushigame area of Yamakoshi, Niigata Prefecture. This region is the birthplace of Nishikigoi and remains the centre of Japanese koi breeding, where generations of breeders have refined their craft.

Nagashima Koi Farm spans 8.7 acres (approx. 35,200 m²) of mud ponds, carefully divided to raise koi across all stages of development:

• Tosai (1-year-old koi): 3.7 acres
• Nisai (2-year-old koi): 2.5 acres
• Sansai & older (3+ years): 2.5 acres

This structured approach ensures that each koi receives the right conditions to thrive, with space tailored to its growth stage. From traditional ponds in Mushigame to newly established facilities in Takezawa, Nagashima-san continues to invest in both heritage and innovation.

The farm is especially admired for its Kohaku, Showa, and Sanke, but also produces other high-quality Gosanke and selected varieties. Nagashima’s koi are celebrated for:
