Oofuchi (Fukasawa) Koi Farm

Tucked away in the mountains of Nagaoka, Niigata Prefecture, Oofuchi Koi Farm—led by Mr. Hideaki Oofuchi—is a breeder admired for both scale and artistry. The farm operates more than 100 mud ponds and maintains around 100 parent stocks, producing an impressive 20,000 koi each year. Its secluded location, with fresh mountain water and snowy winters, creates the perfect natural conditions for raising koi of strength, refinement, and beauty.

Oofuchi’s most famous achievement is the creation of the celebrated Oofuchi Kujaku, developed from a Kujaku × Goshiki cross. This striking variety went on to win Best in Variety at the All Japan Koi Show (1996) and remains a benchmark of quality in the hobby.

Beyond Kujaku, the farm is also known for producing superb examples of:

• Shusui – Classic Doitsu lineage with balanced red and blue.
• Sanke – Elegant tri-coloured koi with sharp patterns.
• Kawarimono – A broad range of non-Gosanke varieties, prized for uniqueness.
• Ginrin Soragoi – A standout Oofuchi specialty, with soft grey bodies and thick glittering scales that capture light beautifully.

Alongside these, the farm also breeds high-quality Gosanke (Kohaku, Sanke, Showa), Goromo, Ochiba, and Utsurimono, offering a wide and carefully maintained portfolio.

Mr. Oofuchi honed his skills under the guidance of the legendary Toraichi Miya of Miyatora Koi Farm, blending deep-rooted tradition with his own innovations. His breeding philosophy is simple: to raise koi that embody clarity, vitality, and distinctive beauty, while preserving the heritage of Niigata’s koi-breeding culture.
