Shinoda Koi Farm

Located in the Nagaoka region of Niigata Prefecture, Shinoda Koi Farm is one of Japan’s most respected specialist breeders, with a history spanning several generations. Today, the farm is led by Shinoda Masaru, who continues the family’s tradition of producing koi that combine size, strength, and powerful colouration.

Shinoda is particularly renowned for its Hi Utsuri—fiery red and black koi that stand out for their bold patterns and strong bodies. The farm also produces outstanding Doitsu Showa and Gin Rin Showa, which are admired for their sharp contrast and glittering scale quality. Over the years, Shinoda’s koi have gained an excellent reputation both in Japan and internationally, often commanding attention at koi shows and in private collections alike.

Alongside these signature lines, the farm breeds a range of classic and Kawarimono varieties, ensuring diversity while maintaining the highest standards of health and refinement.

 

Like many of Niigata’s traditional breeders, Shinoda raises its koi in natural mud ponds through the summer months, where fresh mountain water and natural food sources help the fish develop vibrant colour and excellent skin quality. Careful selection and culling throughout the year ensure that only koi of the finest quality are retained.
